    1. I loved this I loved Negley s use of colour, so many punchy primary colours just made the pages super vivid I don t want to say much about the plot but I really enjoyed his framing of all the images and the styling I thought this was a playful really sweet little book and I can t wait to read Negley s other work, namely Tough Guys Have Feelings Too c

    3. Why didn t I think of that my frustration when I learn about a cool book from a friend, Monika, who always has a keen eye for the good stuff and afterwards when I own and read it I m really mad at myself for not thinking of it first.Great fun book Cool illustrations, a quick read and definitely aimed at those used to be cool dads that might be sporting ink and were in a handful of not so great punk rock bands.I think this book might be the catalyst to get my own kids to check out their dad s vid [...]

    4. This book tells a story that most children can easily relate to They see hints of an expired coolness in their parents and wonder what could have happened to make them so uncool Combine this story with a fun illustrative style, and you have got a winner.

This review was originally written for The Baby Bookworm Visit us for new picture books reviews daily Hello, friends Our book today is My Dad Used To Be So Cool by Keith Negley, a very funny story about formerly cool parents and the kids we love to embarrass. The book s narrator, a little boy, is pretty sure his dad used to be cool He has tattoos, he used to ride a motorcycle, he may have even been in a band the little boy isn t sure, but he has some evidence that makes him think so, like the dru [...]

    17. Another beautiful book from Keith Negley I cracked this one open with my own set of preconceptions and first impressions based purely on the title and concept of the book Ultimately, Negley s skill as an illustrator really won me over, so this one belongs in the good pile I will say that I think Tough Guys Have Feelings Too is much better and important of a story, if perhaps less cleverly illustrated.Essentially, My Dad Used to Be So Cool reads like a 32 page father s day card A boy laments how [...]

    21. This is a near universal subject matter kids struggling to see their parents as real people before they came along but the true brilliance of this book is the illustrations and the story they tell On multiple pages you will see similarly composed illustrations one where the dad is doing something cool like shredding on a guitar onstage with rock n roll posture the other juxtaposed with the same posture in the same compositionbut the dad is tying his kid s shoe The subtle message is the dad made [...]

This book was provided to me as a digital review copy by the publisher, via Edelweiss. The little boy in this book is convinced that his dad has a rock star background He wonders how his dad went from being so cool to being his pretty normal dad.I don t know about his dad, but this book is definitely cool The illustrations are spot on and fun The narrative is simple, but is so beautifully supplemented by the artwork that it turns into a much complex and thoughtful story I love the innocence with [...]

    23. What do kids think their parents were like when they were younger In this sweet story a young boy wonders what happened to make the dad give up all the cool things he used to do like play in a band and ride a motorcycle Now his dad folds laundry, vacuums, and plays with him Definitely not as cool as those other things But, the boy still loves his dad, even though he s not cool any If you like this one you ll definitely want to find Tough Guys Have Feelings Too by the same author.

    24. A littler boy introduces readers to his father that used to be so cool that he was in a rock band The boy wonders what might ve set his father s life on a different path all the while he has fun playing with him By story s end, the boy recognizes that his dad is still cool, but in a different way than a rock and roller, even though he still has moments when he is so embarrassing Vibrant retro looking artwork Fun read aloud featuring a dad who sports tattoos PreK 2.

    25. A kid imagines the cool life his dad must have had and wonders why he s become so serious, or uncool But we see that maybe coolness is a matter of perspective and even responsible and serious dads can rock on It s hard to nail down the style of this story, it s cheeky meets punk meets _______ The illustrations feel like a hipster revival of a vintage style It s fun, well told and depicted, I enjoyed it.

    26. This book is pretty awesome A boy has proof all around his house that his dad used to be in the cool He was in a band, had a mohawk, had a motorcycle Now all that is gone Why The adult reader will know why The boy does eventually admit that his dad is still pretty cool since he does all sorts of things with him Super cute and good for preschool and older kid storytimes.

    27. My Miss 10 and I both got a smile or two out of this amusing and modest reflection of one little boy s perception of his dad Retro funky coloured illustrations suit the economic narrative perfectly as the boy ponders the question as to why his dad stopped being cool The answer is only ever implied by the visual narrative which makes for a bit of tongue in cheek fun.
